What exactly is DEATH OF X???

The DEATH OF X storyline has SEVERAL integral points. So, lets start with what we know, shall we? DEATH OF X is set during the eight-month time gap that transpired right after Secret Wars. All the stories in all the books were pushed into the future, with a lot of secret things that happened during the months not mentioned, yet. DEATH OF X is one of those; it will serve as an explanation for the Terrigen-entwined “cold war” that the mutants and Inhumans have been embroiled in across all the books; since last fall. So, it will fill a slew of not-known facts and will answer just as many, if not more questions;in the process, that many devoted fans have waited months to be told. Aaron Kuder said the following in an interview about DEATH OF X..

“It is also pivotal to know that this isn’t just a hero vs. hero story. This isn’t about politics or who disagrees with who. The mutants are dying at the direct cost of the Inhumans/Nuhumans being created.

Why does CIVIL WAR II pertain to the story?

CIVIL WAR II is an ESSENTIAL part of this story, due to the fact that we see the first appearance of Ulysses and his powers. wp-1468181992756.jpgUlysses is able to feed off the synergy of all things around him. His powers enable him to predict a possible future based on algorithms of what surrounds him. He not only has visions, but he can project them for others to see. The Inhumans believe him to be a hero, or if you listen to Magneto, a propagator of the Inhumans agenda. DEATH OF X has quickly been ruled out by MARVEL as a “tie-in” event, but a war of its own, at the same time. Ulysses is not just at the forefront for DEATH OF X, but he is the EPICENTER of CIVIL WAR II. He has already had serious ramifications, including the death of The Hulk.

Terrigen Mists and the effects of it

The following is courtesy of Wikipedia. “The Terrigen Mist is a natural mutagen, arising as a vapor from the Terrigen Crystals, which are able to alter Inhuman biology. The Mists were discovered by the Inhuman geneticist Randac approximately 25,000 years ago. He immersed himself in the Mists and gained mental powers comparable to the Eternals.[1] Sometimes the mutated subjects gain superhuman abilities; Medusa, Black Bolt, and Kamala Khan are three examples of this.

As revealed in CIVIL WAR 2: X-MEN #3, the Terrigen Mists are TOXIC to mutants and is theorized to be deadly to standard Homo sapiens. It has also been stated that the mists cause sterilization amongst the remaining mutants, which would explain why the world renown mutants of Marvel could fade into obscurity..

“Right now things are not good for mutantkind. On the flipside, Inhumans have been growing and becoming more prominent in the Marvel Universe. There is a lot of tension between these characters about that.”

“We’ll definitely see some characters who have been missing in action since the series launch. We’ll answer the question of where certain mutants have been, and what’s happened to them. Cyclops is the big one, he’s the one we’ve said was dead and that’s all we’ve really said. His death was very controversial, so obviously that’ll be a big part of the story we’re telling here.”

Charles Soule, one of the two writers for DEATH OF X, also said this about Black Bolt and Medusa’s role in the upcoming series: “For both sides of this, it doesn’t affect just a small group of them. There are heroic Inhumans, but it also affects the bad guys and the psychotic ones just as much as it affects the nice love-and-happiness ones. It’s not just their livelihood and way of life but their very lives at stake, so they’re gonna react the way you think they would. Some people move to some kind of shared solution, but there’s a lot of superhero punching and blasting and stuff like that.”

wp-1468361773657.jpgX-Men fans have had theories traversing in their minds for quite some time now. It is their belief that Marvel is purposefully edging out the team of mutants, due to 20th Century Fox owning the franchise rights. Marvel has admitted that they have intentionally emphasized characters and teams that they own the film rights to more frequently.

Emphasis on the Inhumans

inhumansIt is no secret that Marvel has not been shy about showcasing the Inhumans. They’ve been used within Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., so it is clear that Marvel is pushing for the once-obscure and riveting characters to become the MAINSTAY  of the Marvel Universe.

For those seeking answers about “death”

This comic should give us indication as to whether death is referring to one X-Man or the entire legacy of the X-Men altogether.

If Marvel is truly downplaying the X-Men franchise in lieu of the unsetlled character rights between them and FOX, then this is a way to eliminate a majority of their fanbase. As we approach the 2020’s, one could only assume that the next generation may all but forget about the X-Men; with mutantkind being replaced by the Inhumans.. Now, despite all the copyright woes that Marvel has had with 20th Century Fox; it may seem a little absurd for them to completely kill off the mutants. Although, given the fact that they have stopped publishing Marvel’s “First Family”; the Fantastic Four, it is a little easier to believe they would do the same to the X-Men franchise, if they don’t get their way.
